Multi-Effect Crystallizer

This model builds multiple blocks of the crystallizer-effect model to form a multi-effect crystallizer (MEC) system. The number of effects are passed as a configuration option when defining the unit model.

Degrees of Freedom

As in the crystallizer-effect model the state variables at the inlet to the control volume (i.e. temperature, pressure, component flowrates) need to be fixed. The following variables need to be fixed for each effect for the model to be fully specified.

Model Structure

The multi-effect crystallizer model uses the ControlVolume0D to handle mass balance across all effects (with 2 Ports in parenthesis below).

Costing Equations

The multi-effect crystallizer (MEC) is costed using a combination of mass-based and volume-based capital costing, as well as operating costs for electricity and process heating. Each effect is costed separately and the total capital cost of the multi-effect crystallizer is the sum of the capital costs of each effect. This costing approach is adopted from the WaterTAP Crystallizer costing method. The user can choose either mass- or volume-based costing for each effect via the configuration option costing_method. In either case, the following parameters are constructed on the unit costing block for the MEC costing:

The heat exchanger is costed using the following equations:

\[C_{hx,i} = c_{hx} A_{hx} + c_{hx,end} \frac{A_{hx}}{b_{hxe}}^{y_{hxe}}\]

And then the total capital cost of the multi-effect crystallizer is the sum of the capital costs of each effect and the capital cost of a heat exchanger for each effect.

The operating cost of the MEC is the sum of the electricity cost for the recirculation pumps for each effect, and the cost of steam for process heating only for the first effect.

With assumptions of \(h_{rec} = ` 1 m pump head height and :math:\)eta_{pump} =` 0.7 pump efficiency.

Process heat is supplied via steam to the first effect at \(p_{steam} =\) 3 bar (latent heat), and the process heating cost is computed from the heating requirement \(Q\) (\(\text{kJ}\)):

where \(\rho_{steam}\) and \(L_v\) are the density (\(\text{kg}\text{/m}^3\)) and latent heat of condensation (\(\text{kJ/kg}\)) of steam, respectively.
